1. What is the role of this society?

The objectives of the Maryborough and District Animal Refuge Society are:
To prevent cruelty to animals as far as possible.
To assist in any way possible the enforcement of existing laws relating to the protection of animals from cruelty.
To find homes for stray and unwanted animals.
To promote the interests of the Society.
To raise funds for the aforesaid objectives of the Society.
To endeavour to procure the enactment of such legislation as may be considered necessary to promote such objectives.

2. What staff are employed and what are their duties

The Refuge Manager , Helene, is helped by the Assistant Manager Stacey and they are responsible for the overall management of the Refuge. There is a Caretaker that resides on the premises. All other staff at the Refuge are volunteers from Community Services, TESS, Work for the dole scheme and Wide Bay Volunteers. Other members of the community, independent of any organisation, also donate their time to assist in the running of the refuge. Some of these members place themselves on an unofficial roster, to clean the cattery and kennels, medicate the animals, walk and bath the dogs, assist in the feeding and the upkeep of mowing and gardening etc. The committee members of the Refuge are also volunteers.

3. A variety of animal species are cared for by the society.

Mainly cats and dogs. However, chooks, a horse and other animals have been received from time to time!

4. What treatment does each dog undergo before rehoming?

All dogs and puppies receive flea and worm treatments and the puppies also receive Parvo Virus and C4 shots whilst at the refuge. Cats and kittens receive an F3 vaccination. Please contact the Refuge with regards to our desexing policy.

Advice on the importance and benefits of desexing.

5. Is there any pre or post purchase education/assistance?

Two booklets, one for puppies and the other for older dogs have recently been devised, on various aspects of animal care and training and the appropriate one is handed out with each dog adoption, together with a discount training voucher with a local Delta Society Australia CGC accredited trainer, is handed out.
Smart Paws, Dundathu, is offering free dog training for any ex refuge dogs starting Saturday 14th February. If you are interested in coming, please phone us and book in.

Remember, desexing your pet is the first step in the war against “unwanted” pets and cruelty.
If you adopt an animal and don't have it desexed, you are not helping the problem, you are adding to it!

Please feel free to check out what pets are available.
The Refuge is always looking for donations of pet food, worming tablets, blankets, collars, leads, disinfectants, bleach and repair materials such as bags of cement, paint, nails, screws, steel, roofing materials, timber, wire, etc. …. In fact, anything that you would care to donate will be much appreciated.
